With the first day of camp quickly approaching at Camp Blue Ridge, we thought this would be the perfect time to discuss drop off day. For children who are going to our overnight summer camp near North Carolina for the first time, drop off day can be a scary time for children and parents alike. Follow these tips to make drop off day at summer camp a little less scary and stressful this year!
  1. The day before you leave for summer camp, double check that everything is packed. Look over the summer camp packing list and assure your child that everything is packed and ready for them to have the best summer ever.
  2. Homesickness is inevitable, and the next couple of days are going to be rough. Talk to your son or daughter about how they might feel. Remind them this is completely normal and they will feel better before they know it. Make sure that you pack some reminders of home like a stuffed animal or photographs to ease the feelings of homesickness at overnight camp.
  3. On drop off day, don’t let your son or daughter sense that you are upset or stressed. Children very often will pick up on these feelings and not want to leave you. Stay confident and try to get their mind off of being upset. Talk about the summer camp activities they will get to try out, the new friends they are going to make, and all of the new memories they will be coming home with.
  4. Now once you are at summer camp, don’t linger. Say your goodbyes and remain positive. The longer that you stay, the harder it will be for your child to adjust to being without you and getting used to their new summer camp environment.
Quick reminder that your son or daughter will have an amazing time at summer camp and drop off day gets easier every year.
